Freedom from Legalism!
What does true freedom look like in the life of a believer? In Luke chapter 6, we encounter Jesus in direct conflict with the Pharisees over the Sabbath, and what unfolds is far more than a debate about rules. It is a window into the heart of God. The Pharisees had taken a gift meant to bring rest and renewal and buried it under 39 categories of human-made regulations, turning a blessing into a burden. Jesus cuts through all of it with a declaration that should still stir something in us today: the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath. That is a claim of divine authority, and it reframes everything. The Sabbath was never designed to weigh us down. It was designed to lift us up, to pull us away from the endless grind of productivity and point us back toward the God who created us, sustains us, and loves us. When we understand that Jesus fulfilled every requirement of the Old Testament law, we begin to see that our relationship with God is not maintained through a checklist. It is rooted in grace. The invitation for us is to stop performing and start resting, not just physically, but spiritually, in the finished work of Christ.
