The Awesome Authority of Jesus!

What sets Jesus apart from every other religious figure or teacher who has ever lived? That question sits at the heart of this powerful exploration of Luke chapter 4, where we find the people of Capernaum utterly astonished because Jesus taught with an authority unlike anything they had ever encountered. Unlike the rabbis of his day who hedged their answers and debated among themselves, Jesus spoke as one who knew the full truth of every matter, because he is the creator God of the universe in human flesh. We are reminded that this same Jesus spoke galaxies into existence, holds all atoms together, and possesses all authority in heaven and on earth. The casting out of a demon in the synagogue is a vivid demonstration that his authority is not merely theoretical. Even the forces of darkness recognize who he is and tremble. For us, this raises a deeply personal question: if Jesus truly holds all authority, are we actually living as though he does?
